Biertan ? The Fortified Church
Biertan is the place in Romania where archeologists discovered a bronze vase with the Latin inscription `Ego Zenovivs Votum Posvi` - proof of the Daco-Roman continuity on these places.

Beside this archeological proof, the village of Biertan is also proud of its Fortified Church, a Gothic monument whose foundations were laid 500 years ago. Finished somewhere between 1510 and 1516, the church was in the middle of a fortified peasant fortress in order to resist the Turks` attacks in the 15th century. The oval construction surrounded by four square-shaped towers and defense walls was part and parcel of the group of fortified churches in the area of the Tarnava rivers. The church was fortified in the last stage of its building in 1516.
This church is one of the most important hall-churches in Transylvania with its three naves separated by octagonal columns of the same height. Another significant element is the stone-built pulpit which proves the period of renewal in the art of stone-cutting. The same association between the late Gothic and the Renaissance periods is obvious in the construction of the central altar in 1515 with wood-carved figures standing for scenes of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In the centre there is another Crucifixion scene ? an allegory of redemption through sacrifice, an iconographic motif in the mystical German literature, where faith is symbolically identified with a tree on whose branches the apostles of Christianity stay. There are also tomb sculptures, indicative of the same stylistic period, which were made by the most important artist of the 17th century Elias Nicolai.

These are some of the reasons why one should visit the village of Biertan and especially the Fortified Church.
