The most important mountain resorts from Romania are: Sinaia. Located in a beautiful mountainous region, at the foothills of the Bucegi Mountains, about 120km from Bucharest and 44km from Brasov, in the Prahova Valley, Sinaia is one of the oldest and most famous mountain resorts, often referred to as "The Pearl of the Carpathians". Located at an altitude of 767 m and 860 m, Sinaia boasts ski slopes at an altitude of 2,000 m, on the plateau of the Bucegi mountains. In the resort can be also visited important cultural sights like Peles Castle, Pelisor Castle or Sinaia Monastery. Poiana Brasov. Just 12km away from Brasov city, in a glade surrounded by coniferous forests, at the foot of the Postavarul Massif, you will find Romania's most famous skiing resort, Poiana Brasov. It’s referred to in ski directories all over the world, often compared to other major resorts like Chamonix, Zakopane or Cortina D'Ampezzo in terms of natural setting. The snow layer lasts for about 120 days a year. It features great hotels and restaurants, very modern winter sports facilities, 9 ski slopes. It is preferred by some tourists because it is relatively inexpensive compared to ski resorts in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and other European states. Predeal. The northernmost resort on the Prahova Valley, 25 km from Brasov, 16 km from Sinaia, 147km (100miles) from Bucharest, is the town on the highest elevation in Romania at 1033m altitude. It is surrounded by five massifs: Postavaru, Piatra Mare, Bucegi, Baiului and Fitifoi, being a good base for mountain hikes and, in winter, for skiing down the Clabucet and Cioplea slopes.The name is derived from Romanian "pre deal" which means "on the hill". Vatra Dornei. Vatra Dornei is also known a winter sports resort with its many slopes and ski lifts. Black Hill (Dealul Negru (altitude 1.300 m)) and Runc Hill have tracks and slopes for winter sports. From Vatra Dornei there are routes to the Giumalau Mountain and to the Suhard Mountain. Durau. On one of the routes in Ceahlau Massif the tourists can admire Duruitoarea Waterfall, (25 m high) with an impressive flow and a deafening noise (where it gets the name from ) The tonic, stimulating under alpine climate, the fresh air with no dust or allergic particles , the ozone atmosphere represent the main natural factors of treatment. The resort is reccomanded for rest and the treatment of asthenic neurosis, of weaknesses, anaemia, for recovery after intense physical or intellectual efforts. Arieseni. The resort is situated at the border between Alba and Bihor Counties, at the foot of the Apuseni Mountains 950 metres above the sea level. It is an important tourist attraction as it represents the starting point for mountain walking and climbing in the Apuseni. There are also certain facilities for doing winter sports: a ski slope which lies over 3.8 square km and which is practicable at night as well. The resort is also a well-known agro-tourist area.
