There are many regions in Romania where rural and traditional tourism is very well developed but we’ll present to you just few of them, enough to create an image about what Romanian village, life and traditions means.
Bran area (near Brasov). The well-known agro-tourist area consists of some "tourist villages" (Dragoslavele, Fundata, Moeciu, Bran) which are the basis for rural tourism through their over 500 boarding houses (ranged from two to five "daisies" according to international standards). In this area the tourists can find accommodation in peasant houses and boarding houses where they will be treated as members of the family and they will get accustomed to the customs and the specific traditions. This may turn into an exciting adventure for both children and grown-ups. The area is also the starting point for one-day trips to Brasov, Poiana, Brasov, Predeal, Sinaia, the Fortress of Rasnov or to other places in the County. One can go hiking in the Piatra Craiului mountains, the Dambovicioarei Cave, Rasnoavei Gorges or other exciting places as well. Marginimea Sibiului. Marginimea Sibiului is a unique ethnographic area in Romania situated west of Sibiu, limited in the southern part by Sadu valley and north by Saliste valley including 18 villages: Boita, Sadu, Rau Sadului, Talmaciu, Talmacel, Rasinari, Poplaca, Gura Raului, Orlat, Fantanele, Sibiel, Vale, Saliste, Gales, Tilisca, Rod, Poiana Sibiului and Jina. The festive costumes of a rare elegance, embroidered in black and white, are proudly worn during the holidays and the crafts inherited from generation to generation are still practiced nowadays with great success. The Painted Icons Museum-Sibiel, the Village Museum-Sibiu are completing the image over local traditions. Day trips to Sibiu – the medieval city, former capital of Transylvania, to Sighisoara-medieval Citadel, to Balea Glaciar Lake or in other places from the area can be also organized. Maramures. The land of wooden churches and traditions. It is considered one of the best preserved zones in Europe from the perspective of cultural anthropology and ethnography. Old traditions have remained alive due to the high mountains sheltering the long depression from all sides. Morosenii, as the people of Maramures call themselves, are a hospitable people who like company and talking. The old habit of greeting everyone, originating from the times when people of the same community were few and the strangers even fewer, continues today: when two people meet they greet each other, be they acquaintances or complete strangers. Maramures is one of the few zones where the folk costume has been preserved almost unaltered by urban influences. And although it can be admired only on Sundays when Morosenii go to church, or on the occasion of religious feasts and great fairs, each Morosan, without exception, owns a traditional costume. Not only old people dress in traditional clothes but also “coconii” (preschool children), which explains the continued use of the costume. Maramures is very famous for the wooden churches built here. The oldest and highest wooden buildings from Europe can be founded here. Merry cemetery from Sapanta is another popular place for tourists. Bucovina. The North-East region of Romania is very known for the outdoor painted monasteries and for the hospitality of its peoples. Among the most picturesque treasures of Romania are the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. Their painted exterior walls are decorated with elaborate 15th and 16th century frescoes featuring portraits of saints and prophets, scenes from the life of Jesus, images of angels and demons, and heaven and hell. Deemed masterpieces of Byzantine art, these churches are one-of-a-kind architectural sites in Europe. Far from being merely wall decorations, the murals represent complete cycles of religious murals. The purpose of the frescoes was to make the story of the Bible and the lives of the most important Orthodox saints known to villagers by the use of images. Their outstanding composition, elegant outline and harmonious colors blend perfectly with the surrounding landscape. Bucovina stands out when looking for a quiet place to retreat, go fishing or discover long lost traditional crafts, away from the madness and crowd of the big cities. Nevertheless life in the countryside of Bucovina is simple, traditions are well kept and the people are very hospitable, greeting strangers with joy and offering them a place to sleep and eat.
