It is the biggest medieval castle from Transylvania and a former residence for Transylvanian Governors. Was built starting in early 15th century by the famous Transylvanian Governor – Iancu de Hunedoara (John Hunyad) and by his son Matei Corvin (Mathias Corvinus) who became the king of Hungary. In the afternoon we will visit Sibiu's old town. The major sights are Brukenthal Palace, Big Square, Little Square, Liars Bridge, Evangelical Cathedral, Council Tower, Orthodox Cathedral, Catholic cathedral, Old City Wall and towers.
The first documents regarding Sibiu appeared at the end of 12th century when Sibiu was called `Cibinum` after the river Cibin which crosses the city. In the 12th-13th centuries when the Transylvanian Saxons began to settle in this area, Sibiu was called `Hermannstadt`. The Romanians called the place `Sibiu`, which is reminiscent of the ancient name of `Cibinium`. Sibiu was one of the most important cities from Transylvania and for a while it was the capital. The Medieval Fortress of Sibiu was as large as the Fortress in Vienna in 16th century, is the greatest medieval monument in Transylvania, consisting of walls, fortifications and towers which surrounded it from all sides. Some of these were so well preserved that one can easily imagine what the Fortress looked like 600 years ago. Along our walking tour of Sibiu we will pass by the main landmarks and your tour guide will reveal to you the very interesting history of this town and its evolution along the centuries.
