Breakfast. We’ll cross the Carpathians mountains though a very scenic route crossing the Jiu River Valley. On the other side of the mountains we’ll reach Transylvania – the famous and the most popular tourist destination from Romania – the land of medieval towns, impressive castles, unique fortified churches and charming villages.
What a better start to introduce you to Transylvania than visiting the biggest castle – Corvin’s castle, the former residence of the Transylvanian rulers, dating since 15th century. The castle was built in the time of John the Huniade, a famous Transylvanian Governor and of his son – Matei Corvin, the king of Hungary.
In the second part of the day we’ll explore the mountain villages from Transylvania. Located at the foot of the Carpathians mountains, this area is known as one of the important pastoral areas of Romania where the main activity used to be for centuries and still is, growing animals (sheep and cows) and production of cheese. It is an area with its own customs, traditions, beliefs and way of life, many of them preserved until today.
We’ll enjoy a horse driven wagon ride through a village and its surroundings, we can admire the old houses and see how the farming land and households are organized, we’ll see a local household and gardening area. The best way to end such a day is by having a traditional home-made dinner with local food and drinks. You have the chance to taste the local cheese as we are in a main area of producing it.
